Bathroom Remodel for Seniors: Chris Moore

This bathroom remodel was part of a larger kitchen and bath job for a retired couple who want to spend the rest of their lives in their home. This space was originally two bathrooms. One opened into the hall and one opened into the master bedroom. The clients wanted to have room to move around in their new bathroom and use a wheelchair if that ever becomes necessary. This renovation improved my clients’ lives by making trips to the bathroom easier, safer, and more comfortable.

Aging in place features:

Curbless shower in the corner of the bathroom
Shower has a built in seat with a fold own grab bar, a handheld shower head on a slide bar and a trench drain beneath the curtain to keep water off the bathroom floor.
Cabinets feature removable fronts for access and a countertop medicine cabinet for ease of use.
Linen cabinet is a custom built slide out cabinet mounted on drawer guides. When you pull the handle, the entire cabinet slides out and you can reach the shelves from both sides.
The small door under the linen closet is a laundry chute that leads to the laundry in the basement.
A 3′ pocket door provides plenty of room for access without using any floor space.

Bathroom Remodeling Photos

This is an overview of the bath. Notice the abundance of light. We used recessed lighting, a tubular skylight, and a translucent window to provide plenty of light as well as privacy.
This photo shows a close up view of the shower. The grab bar next to the shower seat folds up against the wall when not in use. Note the trench drain beneath the shower curtain that keeps water out of the bathroom floor.
This photo shows the slide out linen closet, the laundry chute, and the pocket door.
This photo shows the vanities. In this view the fronts have been removed to illustrate the flexibility in this design. Note the pipe protectors to prevent burns and the countertop height medicine cabinet.
